36th Week Visual...

It's been quite a while since I posted pictures of the growth of the belly. And for the first 35 weeks, it was a nice growth. I would constantly get questions as to if the doctors were sure I was that far along because my belly certainly wasn't huge. Even at our baby shower, many people commented that I barely looked like I was just about 8 months pregnant. Even Alyson commented that she was hoping I'd look more pregnant since they were throwing the shower later in my pregnancy that most would have expected.

Well, people can comment no longer. The belly has grown. In fact, it seems to be on a fast track to expansion. Let's just hope that the permits were obtained for expansion because pretty soon we're going to run out of room.

Just to recap...Weeks 4-16

Weeks 20-32 (I haven't posted this yet)

And here is the latest picture... Week 36. As you can see within the last week or so, my belly has really started to grow out. My belly button is not close to popping, but my stomach certainly is. I am without a doubt pregnant - and if I've gotten this big in just the last 2 weeks, I'm afraid to see what will happen with these last 4 weeks.

36 Week Journal...

How far along? 36 wks today... 4 weeks until his due date, 1 more week until he's considered full-term. We'll see when he decides to show up...
Total weight gain/loss: 8.5 lbs above target at last check
Maternity Clothes: I'm looking forward to normal non-pregnancy clothes, just in time for spring/summer too
"Morning" Sickness: N/A
Signs of Pregnancy: Braxton Hicks Contractions, aches in my hips, groin pain, bloody nose, dry skin
Stretch Marks: I'm up to 7 stretch marks
Sleep: Sleep hasn't been bad at all, it's when I try to get out of bed or really switch positions that suck because my hips & groin areas scream in pain. I've began using my arms & elbows to get me up & out, otherwise it's a bit tough
Best moment this week:
*My Birthday - I had a wonderful birthday. Thank you for the birthday wishes & presents, they are most appreciated
*My massage
*Getting my new camera & playing with it
Worst moment this week: Very late Wednesday night (around 11:45pm on my birthday), I was listening to Alexander and he was very still and his heartrate was a lot lower than the desired rate. So I ended staying up for most of the night either listening to him or trying to make him move around. That made for a very crappy Thursday. It must have been a VERY long nap because come Friday morning he was back to his normal self with a normal heartrate and normal movement.
Movement: It feels a lot like squirming and he kicked my ribs for the first time
Gender prediction: He's a BOY - Alexander Christopher
Labor Pains: Braxton Hicks Contractions
Belly Button in or out? Still in
Wedding rings on or off? On & loose
What I'm going to miss/What I can't wait for:
Miss: His kicking & talking to him
Can't wait: To wear normal clothes & for HIM
Also to see who wins the bet - me or Alyson
Weekly Wisdom: Getting a pregnancy massage is sooo relaxing - I highly recommend it!
Milestones/Fun Moments:
*Daycare is confirmed
*Dan installed the carseat/bases
*Got my new camera!
*"Found" a bookshelf from Dave (thanks Dave!)
*Charged the video camera
What we need to do (we're in good shape):
*Finish packing the hospital bag & Dan's bag
*Pack the car!
*Last minute cleaning (sterilizing bottles, etc)

36 Week Growth...

How your baby's growing: Your baby is still putting on the pounds — about an ounce a day. She now weighs almost 6 pounds and is a little less than 19 inches long. She's shedding most of the downy covering of hair that covered her body as well as the vernix caseosa, the creamy substance that covered and protected her skin during its submersion in amniotic fluid. Your baby swallows both of these substances, along with other secretions, which will stay in her bowels until birth. This blackish mixture, called meconium, will become her first bowel movement.
At the end of this week, your baby will be considered full-term. (Babies between 37 and 42 weeks are considered full-term; a baby born before 37 weeks is pre-term and after 42 is post-term.) Most likely she's in a head-down position by now, which is optimal for a smooth delivery, but if she isn't in the next week, your provider may suggest scheduling an "external cephalic version," which is a fancy way of saying she'll try to coax your baby into a head-down position manually, by manipulating her from the outside of your belly.

Your baby is working hard to accumulate all the fat she can, in preparation for delivery. Her body is growing rounder every day, since about 15 percent of her total weight is now made up of fat. Once she is born, this fat layer will help her maintain her body temperature and give him a reliable energy source.
*Baby now weighs around six pounds and is 20.7 inches long.
*Major organ development is already complete, such as the kidneys and liver.
*Some fine-tuning, such as the final development of the lungs, is still taking place inside the womb.
*Baby's head is round, but by the time she makes it through the birth canal it may be temporarily a bit misshapen as the soft bones of the skull are compressed by powerful contractions. Her head shape will return to normal within a few days.

How your life's changing: While your baby continues to grow and crowd your internal organs, you may find that you're not as hungry as you were a few weeks ago. Smaller, more frequent meals are often easier to handle at this point. On the other hand, you may have less heartburn and have an easier time breathing when your baby starts to drop down lower in your pelvis. This dropping — called lightening or engagement — is more likely to happen before labor if this is your first baby. When it does, though, you may feel increased pressure in your lower abdomen, making walking increasingly uncomfortable. Some women say it feels as though they're carrying a bowling ball between their legs, or as if the baby is going to fall out. (Don't worry, she won't!)

You might also notice that your Braxton Hicks contractions are a little more frequent now. Be sure to review with your practitioner exactly when and where to call her when you think your labor has started. As a general rule, you should call when you start having regular contractions coming every five minutes for about an hour. Of course, you'll want to call right away if you're not yet 37 weeks and have signs of preterm labor. You should also call without delay if your water breaks (or if you even think you're leaking amniotic fluid), if you notice a decrease in your baby's activity, or if you have any vaginal bleeding, fever, severe headaches, abdominal pain, or changes in your vision. Even if you're enjoying an uncomplicated pregnancy, it's best to avoid flying during your final month, when you're more likely to go into labor. In fact, many airlines won't let women on board who are due to deliver within seven or sometimes 30 days of the flight. (No worries, I would like to stay put...)

With a month of pregnancy to go, you'll probably continue to gain weight, although the majority of your pregnancy weight gain has occurred.
If you've been experiencing heartburn, the baby's movement down toward your cervix may ease that discomfort. Your appetite may return because the baby is no longer putting as much pressure on your stomach and intestines.
As Baby grows larger, and amniotic fluid volume decreases, it's not as easy for her to move around. This may lead to an alteration in the sensation of fetal movements. For some women, it feels as if the baby is not moving as much as it had been, but everything is just fine. Things are just getting a bit crowded inside the uterus.

Photo Shoot...

Just wanted to share how amazing my new camera is! I played with it today using Grover as my subject, he was very cooperative.

The colors are so vibrant and the pictures are amazingly crisp even when you zoom in. I love my new camera - Alexander is going to look so cute. Oh wait, he's going to be cute as it is!

Enjoy Grover in all his colorful glory.

Birthday wishes & caviar dreams...

Today is my favorite day of the whole year! I'm sure that will change soon depending on when Alexander arrives, but for now, my birthday will continue to be my favorite day of the year!

I'm looking forward to a nice, relaxing day. Going to get a massage that Dan got me for Valentine's Day, run some errands, do more (in person) in depth research for my camera that I'm planning to buy this weekend. Then Dan & I are going to go to dinner with my parents & my sister for the traditional birthday dinner.

I tried to look for a new place as we have the same "birthday restaurant" for each of our birthday's, but I couldn't find a place that had a GOOD dessert. So, we're sticking with Vinny Ts because I enjoy their Chocolate Bomba dessert. Guess chocolate does rule the brain...

And in honor of birthday's... can you tell which baby is who??

35th Week Journal...

I can't believe we only have 5 weeks left - we're coming into the home stretch! I'm officially considering last week to be the "uncomfortable" week of this pregnancy...

I really don't know what the next 5 weeks will have in store for us. I do know that we are in really great shape if this baby did come early. All of the essential things are done and whenever this baby comes will come into a world so loved.

How far along? 35 wks today (WOW)
Total weight gain/loss: 8.5 lbs above target
Maternity Clothes: I do not want to buy another item of Maternity clothes
"Morning" Sickness: N/A
Signs of Pregnancy: Braxton Hicks Contractions, aches, groin pain
Stretch Marks: I have a total of 5 pregnancy stretch marks on my belly (2 on my right side, and 3 on the left) and I'm realizing they're getting a bit darker. I bathing myself in cocoa butter.
Sleep: Sleeping hasn't been that bad but when I need to switch posititions or get up, that's when it's quite uncomfortable ...however I was up at 3:30am on Saturday and could not fall back asleep. So I got up and did some scrapbooking, might as well be productive!
Best moment this week:
*Doctor's Appointment/hearing the heartbeat
*Booked my next 2 doctor's appointments where they are a week apart
*Crossing things off our to do list
Worst moment this week:
*Monday. I woke up and was FINE. At about 3pm the "achey" switch turned on. My groin, hips & pelvis hurt, or ache. This is where I understand about the waddle. I walk alot slower, it's not easy to stand up. Forget about trying to get up when lying down - that sucks. I took me the whole week, but I realized that using my arms & elbows to get up rather than my legs are easier on the pain. And it's been consistent ever since...
*Realizing that I have 7 Reviews to write for work plus my own self-review and I only have 5 weeks to go (potentially) plus I still have to train people on my team to do some of the day-to-day tasks. I feel like I'm running out of time.
Movement: Still moving around but now it's more of squirming
Gender prediction: He's a BOY - Alexander Christopher
Labor Pains: Braxton Hicks Contractions
Belly Button in or out? Still in
Wedding rings on or off? On, still loose
What I'm going to miss/What I can't wait for:
Miss: His kicking & talking to him
Can't wait: His Arrival & my birthday (33 yrs old on Wednesday 2/21) - I *LOVE* my birthday in case you didn't already know! And the best part is this year I only want/need two thing - a new pair of sneakers and money to go towards my new camera! There is nothing else I want or need, because I already have everything else. Yup, I'm that lucky of a girl.
Weekly Wisdom: Make sure to put your thoughts about labor/delivery down on paper, pack early enough so you don't have to worry or you still feel okay to pack
Milestones/Fun Moments:
*Doctor's appointment was quick & normal - nothing wrong & I got to hear the heartbeat again
*Spaulding Family Gathering
*Birth Plan is complete
*Got a lot of things done this weekend
*Washing his little onesies was so much fun

What we need to do:
*Send daycare our deposit (IMPORTANT) - Daycare is confirmed, dropping off deposit on Weds.
*Put carseat bases in car (IMPORTANT)
*Finish Hospital Bag (Important)
*Continue washing Alexander's clothes
*Look for bookshelf

35th Week Growth...

How your baby's growing: Your baby's getting big. He weighs a tad over 5 pounds and is just over 18 inches long. Because it's so snug in your womb, he isn't likely to be doing somersaults anymore, but the number of times he kicks should remain about the same. His kidneys are fully developed now, and his liver can process some waste products. Most of his basic physical development is now complete — he'll spend the next few weeks putting on weight.
Most 35-week babies weigh 5 pounds or more and rarely experience major complications if born before they officially come to term. You may feel a tingling or numbness in your pelvic region as the extra weight presses on your nerves, as well as increased movement in your upper rib cage where her feet have come to rest in preparation for the head-down journey into the world. Three to four percent of full-term babies never adopt this position, but remain breech (with their heads facing up). If your baby is part of this stubborn minority, you may be at greater risk for a cesarean section. To prevent this, your caregiver may attempt to turn her from the outside using a process called "external version." She'll also do a sonogram to determine the baby's exact position before deciding whether to attempt a vaginal birth.
Other developments are also taking place this week:
*The central nervous system will continue to mature.
*The lungs will most likely be fully developed by Week 35.
*Baby is beginning to develop daily activity cycles. You may notice that Baby is often more active at night when you're trying to rest!
*Even thought they won't be considered “full-term” until the end of the 40th week, Baby's respiratory and digestive systems are nearly mature.
*Baby's immune system is starting to develop.
*The umbilical cord is now about 20 inches long and one to two centimeters in diameter; at birth, it will be about two feet long and a half-inch thick.

How your life's changing:
Your uterus — now up under your ribs — has expanded to about 15 times its original volume, and you may feel like you've run out of room! If you could peek inside your uterus, you'd see that there's much less amniotic fluid and much more baby in there now. Your ballooning uterus is crowding your internal organs too, which is why you probably have to urinate more often and have heartburn and other digestive problems. If you don't have these problems, you're one of the lucky few.
Your doctor or midwife will probably want to start seeing you every week until you deliver. She may ask you to count fetal movements, to track your baby's activity level. Between now and 37 weeks, she'll also do a culture to check for bacteria called Group B streptococci (GBS). This is done by swabbing the lower end of your vagina and your rectum — the swab is the size of a regular cotton swab, and it won't hurt at all. Group B streptococcus is usually harmless in adults, but if you have it and pass it on to your baby during labor and birth, it can cause complications (like pneumonia, meningitis, or a blood infection). Because 10 to 30 percent of pregnant women have the bacteria and don't know it, it's important to be screened. (The bacteria come and go on their own — that's why you weren't screened earlier in pregnancy.) If you're a GBS carrier, you'll be given IV antibiotics when you're in labor, which will reduce your baby's risk of infection by 70 percent.
You may experience a feeling of dropping, also called lightening or engagement, as the baby slips lower into your pelvis. Starting now, your doctor may begin regularly checking your cervix, looking for effacement and dilation rates, and to check baby's position. "Effacement" refers to how much your cervix has stretched and thinned, and "dilatation" means how much the cervix is starting to open so that Baby can move through the birth canal. While these changes signal that labor is approaching, they may occur as much as three weeks before the actual event. Similarly, "practice" contractions--known as Braxton Hicks contractions--may send you racing for your overnight bag. Unlike regular contractions, Braxton Hicks contractions occur at irregular intervals and do not increase in severity over time.

What a productive weekend...

We had a very nice productive weekend... and the best part, we still have another day off! Gotta love long weekends.

Yesterday we went to my uncle's house for the annual Spaulding dinner for my grandfather & grandmother. It was a nice, relaxing afternoon - plus, I was able to make my grandmother's Irish Soda bread - yummm! Another good thing about the dinner was that I was able to talk to 4 of my uncles who live a few miles away from the hospital. They said that if we go into false labor or if we want to stay at their house as we get closer, we are more than welcome to! So I hope that will be a nice stress-reliever for Dan.

After the dinner, we stopped at Ikea to look for a bookshelf. We didn't find anything we liked, and we discovered that we're probably not Ikea people.

Today, we ran some errands and then came home to tackle our "To Do" list. We got a lot done and I feel pretty good. Especially because I have all day tomorrow to clean the house, wash the sheets, and potentially do some scrapbooking!

We were able to get a lot of things checked off our to do list, and as an obsessive-compulsive person, I love being able to check things of my lists! We hung the shelves, we touched up all the painting, Dan started working on the coat racks, I did 2 loads of laundry of Alexander's clothes (all of his onesies 0-3 months are washed, as well as his coming home outfit and a few other pieces of clothes, burp cloths, blankets, & face cloths). I'll wash some of his pajamas tomorrow. I also packed up the diaper bag(s) and got the majority of the hospital bag packed. I'm trying to figure out how to finish packing the bag when there are things that will go in there but I will need to use them until up til we leave to head to the hospital.

I also took a trip to Babies R Us and stocked up on baby wipes, items for the diaper bag(s), a week and a half worth of diapers, and other little essentials.

All in all it was a good weekend - and the best part is that it's leading up to my birthday which is on Wednesday. And for those who don't know - I *LOVE* my birthday, and since I'm taking the day off and going to get a massage (that Dan gave me for Valentine's Day), I'm really looking forward to the day!

Dr Appt Follow-up & Crafty

I had my dr appt this afternoon (usually I've had morning appointments). For some reason, I was expecting it to take all afternoon but I was out of the office within the hour - that hasn't happened in quite a long time.

I only waited for about 20 minutes this time to be called in. The nurse took my weight & blood pressure - everything is well and right on track. Personally I'm a little disappointed in the amount of weight I've gained overall (8 lbs above where I would have liked to be), but at least I'm consistently gaining what I should for each appointment. The nurse & doctor both commented that the weight & blood pressure are good, so I guess I can't complain.

I waited for maybe 10 minutes for the doctor to come in and it was again Dr. J as Dr. E was on call this week. Dr. J was very nice, as she has been each time I've seen her. I asked her a few questions, I explained that I began to get quite achey this week and told here where the pain areas were. She said that it was quite common at the end of pregnancy and I could take tylenol, or a warm bath/shower to try to relieve the pain. She then measured my belly and said I was measuring exactly where I should be and she was pleased with the progress. She listened to his heartbeat after we had a discussion as to what body part was where (she felt around a bit and confirmed where I thought his butt was). His heartbeat is, in the doctor's words, perfect!

She explained that at the next appointment we would do the Group B Strep screening (oh joy) and then after that I would be coming in every week. WOW - we're really at that point now.

So, all in all a very easy and good appointment. Now it's just a matter of getting used to the aches.

On yet another positive note, I wanted to share the cutest bookends in the whole world. Of course you could buy these somewhere but they'd cost you $30+. I made these with help from Dan (he did the cutting & nailing) and Alyson, she helped paint & attach the baseballs. And they're that much cuter because they were made with love & craftiness. Plus they match the theme of the room - perfectly! Wait til you see the little hooks I'm in the middle of finishing...

Well, it's finally happened...

I am officially an uncomfortable pregnant woman.

It's amazing how quickly this just 'turned on'. One minute on Monday, I'm fine then at around 3p, the uncomfortable gene kicked in. Everything ached, it hurts to sit, it hurts to stand or walk, and this overall feeling of uncomfort makes my gut instinct question whether or not this child will wait until his "official" due date. But again, he could be on time and I'm just experiencing symptoms that every pregnant person experiences with only 5 1/2 weeks to go.

Guess we just have to wait and see... but man, I don't know how women deal with an entire pregnancy of pain, discomfort and uncomfort because experiencing this for 9 months would be torture. And I can see how if this is how women feel towards the end that they would have the thought of "okay, enough already - just let the baby get here"

We'll check with the doctor at this weeks' appointment and see what the doctor has to say about the lastest symptoms.

34th Week Journal...

I can't believe we are only 6 weeks away from the due date. Wow, time really flew by. But I have a feeling that time will drag for the next 6 weeks except at work. And that's just because I still have a ton of stuff to do before I go on maternity leave.
But Alyson & I got a ton of stuff done this weekend, so we really are right on track for the arrival of little Alexander.

34th Week Growth...

How your baby's growing: Your baby now weighs about 4 3/4 pounds and is probably almost 18 inches long. Her fat layers — which she'll need to regulate her body temperature once she's born — are filling her out, making her rounder. Her central nervous system is still maturing and her lungs are well developed by now. If you've been nervous about going into preterm labor, you'll be happy to know that 99 percent of babies this age can survive outside the womb — and most have no major long-term problems related to prematurity.

As of this week, your baby has grown so large she takes up most of the available space inside the uterus, and can no longer float around your womb. Baby is now about 4.7 pounds and about 16.8 inches long. Meanwhile, other exciting things are still going on inside the womb this week:
*Your baby's adrenal glands are growing and producing corticoid hormones that, together with prolactin from the pituitary, will stimulate lactation.
*The vernix coating on the baby's skin is getting thicker to better protect Baby's skin.
*Baby's skull bones are still quite pliable and not completely fused together at the top of her head, which will make it easy for Baby to slip down the relatively narrow birth canal.
*Baby's skin is gradually becoming less red and wrinkled as the fat beneath it fills out and stretches the skin.

How your life's changing:You may be feeling a little fatigued lately, and that's perfectly understandable. Let yourself slow down and save some energy for labor day. If you have to spend a lot of time on your feet, try wearing a maternity belt that supports your abdomen and helps redistribute some of the weight. And if you've been sitting or lying down for a long time, don't jump up too quickly. Blood can pool in your feet and legs, which may cause a temporary (but rapid) drop in your blood pressure and make you feel dizzy when you get up.
In the next couple of weeks, you'll probably be tested for Group B streptococcus (GBS), a type of bacteria carried by up to a third of pregnant women.

Around this time, your doctor will want to check Baby's position in the womb. Because she's grown much larger, she's now tucked up and has probably moved into the proper location for birth. With luck, that's the standard "head down, rump up" position. However, as late as week 34, around four percent of all babies are still facing the other way, with their bottoms or legs toward the cervix. This is called a "breech presentation." At this late stage, a baby can't usually turn around on her own, so your doctor will probably try to coax her into position by manipulating your lower abdomen. This should be performed in a hospital so you and baby can be monitored during the process.

This week may herald some additional puffiness in your feet, hands, face, and ankles, especially during the evening or a warm spell. This puffiness is most likely caused by water retention. It may seem odd, but drinking more water can help ease water retention. (If you're not getting enough water, your body perceives your dehydration as a threat to your survival and begins to hold onto every drop within you.)

Braxton-Hicks ("false labor") contractions may also intensify this week. Relax — it doesn't mean true labor is beginning. Increased pressure from the baby's head may make it seem as if she could suddenly emerge at any moment. Almost always, this just means that the baby is pushing lower than usual into your pelvis. This increased pressure also may cause a harmless numb or tingling feeling in the pelvis area. If you find it uncomfortable, you can try lying on your left side to help ease pelvic pressure. Lying on your left side is the best position because it removes the pressure on arteries caused by your expanding uterus. Your doctor will continue to measure your uterus. It's important your uterus enlarges at an appropriate, consistent rate.

Productive Weekend...

I'm hoping that my productive mood right now (@ 9:10 Saturday morning) continues through the weekend!

The Thank you cards for our baby shower are completed and ready to be mailed today. I would have had them done sooner but this cold kicked my arse pretty much for the past two weeks.

Alyson's coming over this weekend to assemble the last items that need assembling (stroller, carseat & pack & play) and then we're going to replace the lights in the bedrooms upstairs. However, we have a break in the middle because we're going out to dinner with the Dahan's and then we're going to see "Dancing with the Stars". I know, we're cheesy. But we enjoy being cheesy.

Dan's going to finish up the closet by putting the trim up and the newly painted door back on. I'm also hoping he can do a quick sanding job on the bookends he built so I can paint them.

And to finish the weekend off, Gary's coming to finish up the painting - WOOO!! He's going to fix the spots that need a fixin' and add in the details and then the room is complete!

And speaking of complete, we really are pretty much ready for this baby. All we have to do is finish paperwork for daycare, pack the hospital bag, wash clothes for Alexander, and finish up our birth plan. However, I have a ton of stuff to do at work! A TON!
Here's my prediction - from the baby perspective, he'll come when he wants to because we're ready for him. However, if he knows how busy I'm going to be at work the next 6 weeks, he'll come early. And since the majority of babies over the past year (with the exception of 1) has come earlier than their due dates, I'm pretty much banking that he'll come early.

I had a talk with Alexander last night about the dates that are good with Mommy. I know I don't really have a say in this, but a girl can ask right? So we'll see ... but my gut instinct is saying earlier than his due date.

33 Week Journal...

How far along? 33 wks today
Total weight gain/loss: 6.5 lbs over my ideal target, thankfully it's all belly & breasts
Maternity Clothes: I do not want to buy another item of Maternity clothes
"Morning" Sickness: N/A
Signs of Pregnancy: Braxton Hicks Contractions

Sleep: I think I slept better this week until the cold hit me - stuffy nose, congested head, sore throat, good times! Saturday night I was awake at 1:30am and couldn't fall back to sleep until 5am.
Best moment this week:

33 Week Growth

How your baby's growing:
This week your baby weighs a little over 4 pounds and measures 17.2 inches from the top of his head to his heels. His skin is becoming less red and wrinkled, and while most of his bones are hardening, his skull is quite pliable and not completely joined. This will help him ease out of your relatively narrow birth canal.

Starting at about week 26, your baby has slept and awoken at regular intervals. He closes his eyes when he sleeps, and he'll even dream during the last month before birth. No one knows what babies dream about in the womb, but they show reactions ranging from frowns and smiles to crying and kicking. Asleep or awake, you may feel the kicks in a new place around now--in your rib cage, just below your breasts--as he moves into the head-down position where he'll probably stay until birth.

The level of amniotic fluid in your uterus has reached its maximum, making it likely that you have more baby than fluid now. That's one reason why you're probably feeling lots of nudges and pushes — there's less liquid to cushion the blows. (Of course that means you're even closer to your baby now!) If your uterine walls had eyes, here's what you'd see: your fetus acting more and more like a baby, with his or her eyes closing during sleep and opening while awake. And because those uterine walls are becoming thinner, more light penetrates the womb, helping your baby differentiate between day and night (now if only baby can remember that difference on the outside!).
And good news! Your baby has reached an important milestone about now: The development of his or her own immune system that (along with antibodies from you) will be able to provide protection from mild infections.

In these last few weeks before delivery, billions of your baby's brain cells are helping her to learn about her environment. These cells help her to listen, feel, and even see. In fact, this is another important week for visual development. By now, your baby may now be able to experience her surroundings visually, since the pupils of her eye can now detect some light. Her pupils are constricting and dilating to allow her baby to see dim shapes.
Your baby now weighs about 4.4 pounds! (Babies gain a good deal of their weight in the final few weeks before birth.) She is about 16.4 inches long from head to toe.
Other developments this week include:
*Baby's head size will increase about 3/8 of an inch in circumference this week.
*Baby is now sleeping much of the time.
*Baby's lungs are continuing to mature.
*Fat will continue to be added on to Baby's body for protection and warmth.
*The testicles of most boys have by now moved into the scrotum.

How your life's changing:
You may be feeling some aches and even numbness in your fingers, wrists, and hands. Like many other tissues in your body, those in your wrist can swell, which can increase pressure in the carpal tunnel, a bony canal in your wrist. Nerves that run through this "tunnel" end up pinched, creating numbness, tingling, shooting or burning pain, or a dull ache. Try wearing a brace or propping your arm up with a pillow when you sleep. If your work requires repetitive hand movements (at a keyboard or assembly line, for example), remember to stretch your hands when you take breaks. If you're having trouble sleeping at night, try wedging a pillow between your legs and behind your back. If that doesn't help, try sleeping in a semi-upright position, with several pillows behind your head (or sleep in a recliner!). If frequent trips to the bathroom are robbing you of your zz's, cut back on fluids by late afternoon or evening.

Speaking of sleep, rest may be elusive by this point. Insomnia is common during the last trimester, and what sleep you do get will be interrupted by frequent trips to the bathroom. Hemorrhoids, heartburn, reflux (which feels like your food is coming up again), lower back pain, and swollen feet are among the commonest complaints. Many women find that it helps to eat small, frequent meals instead of large ones; use extra pillows to support belly and back; and sleep alone if your partner's tossing and turning (or snoring) wakes you up just as you're drifting off.

By this time, the fetus should have turned around and begun to point head-down in the direction of the cervix (This occurrence will provide more space in the upper abdomen, making it easier for you to breathe.
If you're a first-time mother, your child's head may move into the pelvis this week and press firmly against your cervix. (This happens to about half of all first-time mothers.) If you've already had at least one child, this won't happen until about a week before labor; for some experienced moms, baby won't move into position until the advanced stages of labor.

Boring Dr. Appt...

Yesterday was my 32 Week Dr Appt.

And I have one word to sum it up: Boring. I guess if it had to be one word 'boring' is better than bad, nervous, or disappointing.

My appointment was at 10:45 and I sat in the waiting room for almost 45 minutes (at least Finding Nemo was on) until I was called in. I did the usual urine sample, weight, & blood pressure with the nurse. All are fine & right on target. The nurse was very happy with where my blood pressure & weight were. (Again, I was hoping the weight was a little lower, but I'll take it because it was a good weight gain since the last appt)

Then Dr. J came in about 25 minutes later. Dr. J was the super-cautious one who ordered the Non-Stress Test. Dr. E was unavailable this week because she's on call. Dr. J came in, measured my belly & listened for the heartbeat. She said I was measuring right on point for my due date and that she was very pleased with how everything was progressing.

As she went to listen for his heartbeat, she started high & to the left. I knew she wouldn't find it there but I didn't say anything (I didn't want to get scolded for having a non-medical listening device). She then tried lower and started to hear something. I'm thinking to myself that if she just went a little lower & to the right, she'd find it. And low & behold, that's where it was.

And that was that - I waited over an hour for 5 minutes with the doctor to basically hear "things are progress fine". Thanks, even without medical training I knew that.

Side Note: If I didn't talk to other pregnant women about Dr. Appointments, I would seriously consider switching offices but because EVERY other woman has told me that they always wait quite a long time and then only see the Dr for 5 minutes, then at least I know it's not just me or my doctor's office. Why is it that they make you wait? I just don't get it. Oh well - only 5 appointments left! (Can you believe that?!)

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions...

There is no wrong answer - but on the other hand, there is no right answer, either.

Dan & I had meetings with a daycare center & a pediatrician that are both located within 2 miles of work. We both liked them and had no reservations about either in regards to why we wouldn't want to sign with them. So that leads me to the following question - if we're comfortable with the daycare/pediatrician, why would we go look at additional places or meet with other doctors?

You can look at this from either perspective.

From a "research" perspective, we should meet with others to be able to compare and find out if there are others we like. We should check out other centers because they may offer different programs. And it's always good to have options.

However if you look at it from the other perspective that we met with a doctor who we liked, will be honest with us and not just push drugs on the kid and if necessary make a house call (who does that these days). And he's right down the street from work. We also toured a center that we liked, wasn't nearly expensive as some of the others in the area, and has availability for our timeframe. The center is 2 minutes from work and we can go visit anytime we want during the day and the pick up/drop off times work for us.

Hmmm...

I'm of the belief of the 2nd perspective. If you found someone you liked and wanted to date, would you keep trying to meet other people until you found someone that might be better? Plus, I also feel that we're running out of time and we are running the risk of not having a spot anywhere if we don't make a decision.

Dan's from the first perspective, and as I like to call him "Research Dan". He likes to research everything. He feels it doesn't hurt to have options and more than one opinion.

To be honest, his research should have started back in November when I first received the list of centers, not 7 1/2 weeks before the baby is born.

So we do have another appt with a pediatrician next week that was already made. As of right now, I'll keep that appointment and see what happens. We don't really have a lot of choices for daycare centers because a lot of places I called no longer have availability.

Dan found two more centers and he's going to call them to find out their prices & availability because if they're higher than the place we looked at, why spend even more money. And if they don't have availability, why waste our time & their time.

Just my two cents and things that are sprinting around my mind this week...
